When Pretty Met Punk

With the 2013 Met Ball just been and gone, at Mombasa we're still reeling over all the beautiful, punk-a-licious outfits! With some of our faves being from Emma Watson to Cara Delevingne we are loving the pretty punk vibe hitting our winter wardrobes!
To pull of the edgy look, the trick lies in balancing the pretty with the punk! Mix lace with leathers and rose golds with blacks and the possibilities are endless! Ditch the bubble gum pink lipstick for bold purple reds for cool, impact look (try 'Rebel' by Mac cosmetics)!
We're also loving strappy, simple shoes paired with cluttered dresses for a punk-tastic vibe! Check out our inspo board for more funky-punky ideas!
Clockwise from top left: Red Skater Skirt- $, Lace top- $39.99, Dress Skater Tropical Empire- $54.99, Bow Shorts in Faux Leather- $49.99, Spotty Sunglasses- $14.99, Dress Wave in Flame Red- $49.99, Top Pleather Frills-$39.99, Jumper Sweater Crop in Black Daisy- $39.99, Romper Playsuit Lace Lover in Red- $59.99

Just remember though kiddies, while trends come and go, some things, like tattoos, last for ever. So in the eternal words of Daria,

Mum Knows Best

This week with Mother's Day so close, the Mombasa HQ girls talk about their favourite memories with their mums (plus their tunes of the moment!)
Holly

My best memory with my mum would have to be on my birthday when I was little. I'm born on May 12th, you see, so every few years Mother's day and my birthday cross over! I remember it was so cool because we got to open our presents at the same time and I'm one of those dorks that love watching people open presents so it was such a fun day. We went to lunch and spent the day at the beach together- nothing particularly special happened, but I still loved it! Luckily, this year they cross over again (yay!) so mum and I have a very special day planned which includes sushi, wine and hot rock massages. Ciao!
My favourite memory with my mum would definitely have to be when I baked her 50 lamingtons for her 50th birthday (cutest daughter ever, I know!)
Anyway, she loves lamingtons! So the look on her face when she saw them was just amazing. She was so happy! I love my mum to bits and pieces and I can't wait to spend Sunday with her!

Happy Mother's Day for this Sunday, Mum!

Mombasa Rose x

Be A Good Girl

Let me guess- you forgot it was Mother's day this Sunday. (Don't worry, so did my brother last year, except don't make his mistake and in your haste write 'Happy Birthday' instead of 'Happy Mother's Day' on the card. It got real awkward, real quick.)
But don't fret! We've got you covered with a list of fantastic Mother's Day presents so good that she'll forget all about that one time you woke her up at 3am to pick you up from that party! ...Almost.
Okay let's face it, as kids, we can annoy our parents a little bit. Just sometimes.... so instead of that lecture, save yourselves both the trouble and invest in one of these 'My Pet Peeves' journals- next time she gives you an earful about having elbows on the table, you can simply pass her this to let it out instead. You're welcome.
The might ruin your memories of cooking together as a kid but at least these gruesome cookies are an ice breaker. And they beat endless hours of scrabble. You're welcome.
You know she never gets to sit down a drink her coffee between going to work, dropping the kids and school and other various, never-ending chores you partake in as a mother, so now she can take her much needed caffeine hit with her! And it shows you love your mum and the planet. You're welcome.
Breakfast in bed is always a must on Mother's day, so why not make it extra special with a little message in your toast? You'll put the rest of your siblings to shame. You're welcome.
It's unwritten rule that mums love wine- so why not let her write about it now with with this wine inspired notebook? It's cheaper than actually getting her a bottle and it'll last longer than the night. You're welcome.
Happy Mother's Day everyone!
Love,
Mombasa Rose x

Seeing Red

This week at Mombasa HQ, we're seeing red and loving it! We feel like we should just make it official and click our little shoes three times like Dorothy and fly across the rainbow to Red Land! (Man, we wish this was a real place. Oh, well, at when we play pretend we can wear some of those killer red, glitter pumps! Excellent.)
Check out our inspo board and feel the love! (We knew there was a reason love hearts were red!)
Until next time, some words of wisdom,

Truth or What-To-Wear!

This week, the girls from Mombasa HQ talk about the worst dates they've ever been on (eeek!).
Tune in below!
Holly:
"I think the worst date I've ever been on was a movie date when i was back in high school. It was absolute torture. I think we were watching some kind of Jim Carrey movie but I just could not focus on it because the whole date was so awkward! He didn't really say anything when I got to the cinema except 'Hey, I'm John Doe (I won't give you his real name to avoid any embarrassment) and then walked off to the bathroom and left me in line to wait for tickets! At the end of the movie, he tried to give me a kiss goodnight, and needless to say, I ran out of there as quick as I could! It was a blind date too - never, ever again!"

Kaitlyn:
"My worst date happened in my first year of university I do believe. The guy (we won't name names) had me meet him in the city for "lunch" which, in actual fact, meant shopping for a birthday present for his sister. As in, he had tried to combine an errand he was obviously undertaking last minute into a first date. A great first impression indeed! I was starving and we didn't even end up grabbing lunch. Needless to say, that was the first and last date we ever had."
Eeek! Definitely some cringe-worthy stories right there.
And now a tribute to the queen of worst first dates (and even shorter relationships): Taylor Swift >
Much love,

Music and Muses

This week at Mombasa Rose HQ, we talk about our favourite music and muses. Tune in below!
Kaitlyn wears: Pants Medici Jen: $89.99 http://www.mombasarose.com.au/pants-medici-jen

Kaitlyn
I would say my favourite style muse would be Elinkling, blogger for Style by Kling. I like her style because it's very clean, modern, simple and classic. However, she still makes everything look quite young which i like and try to embody as well. My favourite song at the moment would have to be Falling by HAIM because I went to Noosa over the Easter long weekend and this was our road trip song!
Caitlin wears the Maxi Cinder Sunshine- $59.99 http://www.mombasarose.com.au/maxi-cinder-sunshine
Caitlin
My style muse would have to be Alexandra Spencer, the blogger who runs 4th and bleeker. I like her style because it's very simple and relaxed. Her blog reminds me of a typical Calvin Klein campaign; simple jeans paired with a clean white button down and tousled, soft hair- it's elegant and effortless.
My favourite song at the moment would have to be So Good At Being In Trouble by Unknown Mortal Orchestra. I love it because it's so cruisey and catchy- it's my perfect work music!
Holly wears: Floral Print Mine Shift Dress: $44.99 http://www.mombasarose.com.au/floral-print-mini-shift-dress
Holly
So, my all-time classic, gotta-be-a-favourite style muses would have to be Alexa Chung and Vivienne Westwood! Two completely different styles I know, but I refer to them as my muses, not my 'style icons' for a reason; though I don't exactly emulate Vivienne Westwood's style completely, I love the way she is so out there and fearless- it makes me want to be more confident and take more risks in my own life and wardrobe! I love Alexa Chung as well because of the way she mixes boyish elements with floral, girly basics! Beautiful lace tops with rugged overalls or summery, sweetheart dresses with Doc Martins- I suppose I sort of see it as the 'new androgyny'.
My favourite song at the moment would have to be Fantasy by MS MR because it's so upbeat and yet soft- and it's such a good song to run to because it's so full of energy!
Who's your style icon? Comment Below and let us know!

How We Wear It!

This week the girls from Mombasa HQ choose their favourite item from this season's collection and talk about what they like to do in their spare time. Take a look below!
Caitlin
In my spare time I like to sew- I sew a lot of my own clothes and I'm actually working on a collection at the moment. It's a pretty eccentric assortment, but it's very me. I also like to listen to music, watch Adventure Time and The Mighty Boosh and chill out with my second family: AKA, my friends.
Oh, and trawl the internet to the end of the world.

Kaitlyn
Well, I'm a fashion blogger in my spare time, so I'm always trying to find new inspiration for posts. I'm always on the look out for new locations, new shops and emerging designers. I also rummage through places like Tumblr, Instagram and other fashion blogs for new trends and cool pieces of clothing. I then spend the rest of my time shooting photos for my blog. I'm a pretty busy girl, but I love what I do.

Holly
I love being busy- I'm just one of those people that  can't sit still! In my spare time I like to sing, bake and draw (Not necessarily all at this same time, but this can occur). I'm also teaching myself how to play the guitar at the moment, which is going pretty badly, but I'll keep at it! With whatever time I have left I like write short stories, drink coffee, eat macaroons and watch movies like Breakfast at Tiffany's and Donnie Darko.
Oh, I also like to randomly burst into French.
Donc, au revoir, mon amie! bisous!
